With a sound that has a bit of Martins and a young Crabb Family, I found a lot to like about 11th Hour. While they have a distinct country flavor, they are Southern Gospel, no doubt. Consisting of Amber Eppinette (who is also an excellent young songwriter), Candice Jordan and Justin Morphis, this mixed trio is definitely one to watch. The hard driving title song, “Gather ‘Round” gets things underway and is a great way to start the recording before moving on the medium tempo old time country feel of “My Heart’s Door” and the much slower tempo, “Example” which challenges us to let our lives be an example to the world...”let me be the example for the souls that are lost...the least that I can do is to lead them to You.” The latter two songs were penned by Amber Eppinette and are excellent offerings by this young, up and coming songwriter. Remember her name, because if the offerings on here are any indication of what is to come, we’ll be seeing her name often. Other songs penned by Amber on this recording are “I Love Walkin’”, the powerful “Adam’s Fall”, “Trust in God” and “Home Sweet Home.” The uptempo, “Days Like Today” has a distinct Martin’s feel to it and will no doubt be a concert favorite for the group. The closing song, “A Way in a Manger” is a play off the old Christmas standard and shows us that a way was made for all humanity long ago in a manger...”it was the night that mercy’s gates opened up, it was the hope that Heaven had dreamed of...when God made a way in a manger”. While there are comparisons to a young Crabb Family and the Martins, make no mistake that 11th Hour has their own unique sound. I am not familiar with which female sings what part, but the base of their sound seems to revolve around the alto. She has a strong alto voice and at times sounds like a cross between Joyce Martin and Kim Lord. With Gordon Mote at the helm as producer, I was quite impressed with this recording and what 11th Hour has to offer to us musically and lyrically. As they grow into their sound, I will be interested to see how they will evolve and how Amber’s writing will deepen and develop. This group is definitely on my “watch list”.
